(HERRIMAN, Utah) New Mexico United fell to the Real Monarchs, 1:0, on Saturday evening. Maikel Chang netted the lone goal of the evening following a controversial penalty call on Ethen Sampson, in the 59th minute.
United took their shots – thirteen total, with 3 coming in the first six minutes. Daniel Bruce’s attempted cross/sneaky shot in the first minute was the most threatening. The turning point of the game was the referee’s whistle early in the second half. Contact in the box forced a whistle, and penalty call against United, and the Monarch’s Maikel Chang converted the chance.
Despite 60% possession and nearly 87% passing accuracy, New Mexico could not find the equalizer. They now get set for Wednesday’s showdown with Minnesota United, in the quarterfinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup,
Starr Brothers Starr of the Match: Cody Mizell
A questionable penalty marred what was otherwise a pristine performance from Cody Mizell, and running the captain’s armband to Josh Suggs was pure class.
