The United Soccer League (USL) awarded New Mexico a franchise on June 6, 2018. Although the team won’t kick off against opponents until March of 2019, the front office has already scored some major victories.
“We want to see 600 deposits on season tickets by the time full season tickets go on sale, in mid to late August,” said Vice President of Sales and Partnerships, Ron Patel. “We’re tracking fantastically on that goal.”
These first depositors are known as “Founders”. One Founder, Donovan Finley, couldn’t wait to put down his deposit, even though he was in one of the most magical places on Earth. “I was actually in Disney World when the announcement was made, and as soon as I saw the alert, I went to the website and put down my $25,” Finley said.
The Founders are often on the mind of team owner and president, Peter Trevisani. “Their excitement and their unbridled support of what we are building fuels me every day,” said Trevisani. He continued, “These supporters have invested some money, but more than that, they have invested their emotions and their loyalty, and you can’t put a price tag on that.”
The announcement of the New Mexico franchise was aided greatly by the start of the World Cup. In conjunction with the City of Albuquerque, Civic Plaza Presents, El Jimador Tequila, and numerous other local partners, USL New Mexico has hosted World Cup watch parties, right in the heart of downtown Albuquerque. “ Civic Plaza is an amazing venue for watching these matches,” said Patel. “A giant screen, fantastic friends, and great food and drinks: what else could you ask for?” Thousands have attended the parties, which will wrap up with the Final on July 15th. Kickoff is at 9 a.m.
Fan engagement has been robust in the “Name Your Team” (NYT) campaign. USL New Mexico solicited input and suggestions regarding the team name, from the state, and received hundreds of responses. While the official name will not be voted on, per say, the fan-submitted ideas have been invaluable to the naming and branding process. The team expects to announce a name, and shield soon after the NYT campaign wraps up on July 20th.
Finally, fans of the franchise should stay carefully tuned in, as an announcement regarding the Head Coach is expected soon. Trevisani has been impressed with the quality of applicants and interviews: “We’ve been speaking with candidates who have coached with the US Men’s National Team, MLS and USL. It’s going to be tough to pick one, as they’ve all been so outstanding…it’s a great problem to have.”
