New Mexico United is thrilled to announce the addition of Matthew Watson to the Technical Staff ahead of the 2024 USL Championship season. Watson spent 2023 as an assistant with FC Tulsa, and also served as the Director of Youth Development with Indy Eleven in 2022.
“Matt is a wonderful addition to our technical staff, and will bring new insight to our First Team and Academy,” said United Sporting Director Itamar Keinan. “His terrific talent and footballing mind – both as a coach and former player – instantly helps push us in the right direction.”
Born in Redditch, England, Watson took to football at a young age, trialing with Aston Villa FC at just twelve years old, and signing with Wolverhampton Wanderers FC Academy just two years later. After five seasons with Wolves, Watson journeyed across the Atlantic and attended University of Maryland, Baltimore County, winning Rookie of the Year and Midfielder of the Year accolades in his freshman season. Shortly after, he signed with the Blatimore Blast of the MASL.
After six years with the Blast, Watson was loaned to the Richmond Kickers of USL League 1. Watson played with Richmond for two years, winning a title in the process. Following four seasons with the North Carolina Railhawks, he joined the Vancouver Whitecaps in 2012, playing two seasons there, and another two with the Chicago Fire before moving on to coaching.
