Strong first half not enough to put United through
(April 1, 2026) Albuquerque, NM – New Mexico United’s U.S. Open Cup run has come to an end. The Black and Yellow were eliminated on Wednesday night following a 4-0 loss to El Paso Locomotive.
A strong first half that saw United get the first big opportunity on a Jake LaCava shot on the right side of the box was saved. Later in the first half a strong through ball to Dayonn Harris almost saw the Black and Yellow jump out to a 1-0 lead as Harris’ shot curled just wide of the net and out for a goal kick. El Paso would take the 1-0 lead going into half on a goal by Álvaro Quezada in the 36th minute.
In the second half El Paso would add on three more goals on goals by Alex Méndez, Rubio Rubío and Eric Calvillo to give El Paso the 4-0 win.
“I think the best way to move on from this game is to get back on the field and show we are capable,” said head coach Dennis Sanchez post game. “There’s still questions that are being asked right now, and we need a response, and hopefully we get that on Saturday.”
The Black and Yellow will travel to Southern California this weekend to take on Orange County SC at Championship Soccer Stadium on Saturday. Kickoff for that match is scheduled for 8 PM MT. Fans can watch the match on NM50, Estrella, KRQE.com, and ESPN+.
