Charlie Dennis Continues his run of form
Albuquerque, NM – The two most popular things in Albuquerque right now might be the Balloon Fiesta and Charlie Dennis. The New Mexico United newcomer has continued to make his name in Black and Yellow as he secured not only his first goal of the season but a brace for good measure. In the past seven days Dennis has been part of three of United’s five goals assisting in Greg Hurst’s goal on Sunday against Phoenix and his two goals today.
Dennis came close to becoming the first New Mexico United player to score a regular season hat trick since 2019 as he finished with four total shots with two going in, one blocked and the other missing wide.
Greg Hurst added to the party with one of his own which ties Chris Wehan for the most goals in club history. Hurst’s 12th goal of the season and 38th overall with United put the Black and Yellow up 3-0 on a lead that would not slip away despite former USMNT player Sebastian Lletget brought on back to make it 3-1.
However United did score four goals on the night but that won’t be reflected in the final scoreline or box score. Brother Santiago (Age 8) and Sebas (Age 7) made their club debut on Saturday earning their first minutes on the field. Santiago played a beautiful ball forward to Sebas who instead of going for goal made a play that Ted Lasso himself would be proud of. Sebas fed a perfect through ball back to Santiago who slipped it past the Monterey Bay FC keeper as 10,003 fans erupted at Rio Grande Credit Union Field at Isotopes Park. “We definitely got the team pumped to get ready.” Santiago said post match. The brothers were then subbed off for Ousman Jabang and Sebas handing the Captains armband to Greg Hurst. “It was fantastic.” Head Coach Dennis Sanchez said about the brothers on field chemisty, “I’m gonna show the clip on Tuesday to the guys and show them how to build and play forward.”
Dennis made history himself on Saturday night becoming the winningest coach in club history. With that win he now passes United’s first ever head coach Troy Lesesne for most wins in just two seasons at the helm. “It takes a village.” Sanchez remarked about passing Lesesne.
With that win United has clinched a home playoff berth and will host at least the first round of the USL Championship Western Conference Playoffs at RGCU Field at Isotopes Park. Date and time are still to be determined.
