New Mexico United is pleased to announce the signing of defender Abdi Mohamed to a 25-day contract. Mohamed, a 27-year-old defender with seven international appearances for the Somalia Men’s National Team, is eligible for selection in tomorrow’s road match against Las Vegas Lights FC.
Mohamed spent the last two seasons with Columbus Crew 2 of MLS Next Pro, where he made 54 appearances, and played alongside United midfielder Marco Micaletto. Head Coach Eric Quill is familiar with Mohamed from his time in Columbus. Prior to his time with Crew 2, Mohamed spent two seasons with the Greenville Triumph of USL League 1, winning a title in 2021. Before that, Mohamed made 23 appearances for Memphis 901 FC in 2019.
Mohamed is a graduate of the University of Akron, where he helped lead the Zips to a College Cup Final in 2018. He was born in Nairobi, Kenya, and has Somali Citizenship. He is a versatile defender, who has played along the back line at right back, center back, and left back.
