Cam Wilkerson‘s first pro goal is the difference in Sunday match
Albuquerque, NM – It’s a beautiful Sunday indeed! New Mexico United for the seventh time in eight seasons are headed to the USL Championship playoffs. Cam Wilkerson’s goal of the week shot from outside the box launched New Mexico into the lead for good late.
“Sometimes you just close your eyes and hit it hard,” a gleeful Wilkerson remarked. “It felt good I caught it right and luckily I got it.” The Cal Berkley Alumni’s goal was not only one of the best in New Mexico United history but his first professional goal.
United’s victory was cemented by the gritty play of Charlie Dennis who New Mexico picked up via loan from Phoenix Rising earlier this season. Dennis accounted for Greg Hurst’s opening goal but also created three chances, 90% of all duels and had a pass accuracy of 74%.
Speaking of Greg Hurst, his goal in the 5th minute of play now brings the Scotsman one goal away from tying Chris Wehan’s club record for most goals scored. Hurst sits at 37 career goals for the Black and Yellow in all competitive matches, while Wehan finished his career with 38 total goals.
The Black and Yellow will be back at RGCU Field at Isotopes Park on Saturday October 10th as they take on Monterey Bay FC for Blackout Night at 7 PM.
