New Mexico United is excited to announce that goalkeeper Alex Tambakis will return to the club for the 2023 USL Championship season. Tambakis set several club record in 2022, including an all-time New Mexico-best 1.23 goals against average, a club-record 14 shutouts in his two seasons with the club, 155 saves over that time, and 61 appearances.
Tambakis was voted as the Defensive Player of the 2022 Season by his teammates, fans, United staff and members of the media. His seven clean sheets and 1.23 goals against average were among the best in the USL Championship in 2022.
The Greek keeper’s professional career began with six successful seasons with Panathinaikos of Super League Greece and included a league title in 2014. Tambakis then played one season with VVV-Venlo of the Dutch Eredivise, before making the switch to the Charleston Battery of USL Championship. In his subsequent five seasons in the USL Championship, Tambakis has recorded 26 clean sheets and has been among the front runners for the Golden Glove award multiple times.
