(PORTLAND, Oregon) The Portland Timbers 2 were able to end their seven match winless run, and end New Mexico United’s three game unbeaten streak on Sunday evening, with a 3:2 victory in Portland. Despite a tenacious 90 minute performance, New Mexico could not find the point.
Portland’s Foster Langsdorf struck early, and netted a beautiful volley off of his own chest in the 3rd minute. Timbers 2 would find a second goal early in the second half, courtesy of a Ryan Sierakowski rocket. United looked venomous in the next few minutes but couldn’t put one past Portland keeper Ivacic. Devon Sandoval blasted one off of the right post, and Kevaughn Frater couldn’t convert on a penalty kick, just a few minutes later.
New Mexico finally found pay dirt in the 72nd minute when Santi Moar angled a masterful strike past Ivacic. Just two minutes later, the referee awarded Portland a penalty kick of their own, and Todd Wharton was able to convert, to put the hosts back up 2. Despite losing right back Manny Padilla in the 84th minute, New Mexico continued to pressure the Portland defense, and were able to net a second, when Toni Soler’s crafty ball found an unmarked David Estrada at point blank range. The veteran Estrada finished with ease, but no third goal would come for the visitors
