(March 25, 2021) Albuquerque, NM – New Mexico United and the Somos Unidos Foundation are thrilled to announce the signing of the fourteenth Academy player in their history. Forward/Attacking Midfielder Gael Aleixandre Pena will join the New Mexico United Academy Team for the 2021 season. Pena plays club soccer for NM Rush.
“Gael has been a scholarship player for NM Rush since he was 12 years old,” said Pena’s NM Rush coach Justin Sells. “He played on our NM Rush 02B and 03B, winning multiple state championships, representing New Mexico numerous times at the USYS Region IV Far West Regional Championships and in the USYS National League platform. He is a very creative player that has fantastic vision. His strength as a player is going forward due to his ability to recognize and deliver the final pass or finish scoring opportunities himself.”
Pena’s favorite soccer team is Celta De Vigo and his favorite player is Andres Iniesta. Pena, like every player in New Mexico United’s Academy, will be fully scholarshipped into the program. These scholarships include registration, travel, equipment, and coaching costs. No player will have to pay a cent to compete in New Mexico United’s academy. These scholarships are made possible through the Somos Unidos Foundation and the generosity of community partners and individuals.
