New Mexico United fell at home to Oakland Roots SC on Wednesday night by a 1-2 final score. Sergio Rivas scored a stoppage time goal to bring the match within one score, but ultimately, United ran out of time in their quest for a comeback.
Anuar Jose Pelaez Paba scored first for Oakland in the 42nd minute on a simple low cross that he tucked by United’s Alex Tambakis. Just before the half, United nearly equalized, as Amando Moreno ripped a shot on the volley from about 20 yards out. Oakland goalkeeper Paul Blanchette made one of his several terrific saves on the night to deny the Salvadorian.
Early in the second half, Trayvone Reid doubled the lead for Oakland, as he collected a through ball from Sanny Barbir and slotted low past Tambakis.
United would get one back in second half stoppage time, as Rivas powered his way through a cross for United’s only score. New Mexico United return to play this Saturday, for their second of four home matches in 11 days. They will welcome FC Tulsa to Rio Grande Credit Union Field at Isotopes Park. Kick-off is set for 7 PM.
