These two teams will do battle for the fifth time this season
One down onto the next. After a 2-0 win over Phoenix Rising FC on a rainy Sunday New Mexico United is back at it for the Western Conference Semi-Final. Their opponent? A team they have met four times already this year. Here’s everything you need to know!
Crystal Clear
United fans need not worry about monsoon rain or Tornados trying to form south of Albuquerque this week. As of this moment the National Weather Service in Albuquerque is calling for a clear day with a high of 66 degrees on Saturday.
Scotland Forever
History was made in the last match for Greg Hurst. With his early first half goal on Sunday night the Scotsman became New Mexico United’s all time leading goal scorer. The previous record of 38 was held by club legend Chris Wehan. Hurst and Wehan shared a moment on their respective Instagram stories following the record breaking goal with Wehan congratulating Hurst on the goal and Greg reposting it calling him “His goat”. Hurst now has another club record within reach as if he was to score in this match he would match the most scored in a season. This has happened three times with Devon Sandoval and Kevaughn Frater doing it in 2019 and Chris Wehan doing so in 2021.
Rocky Mountain High
In the past three weeks United will have faced three of the league’s best goal scorers. In Week 34 they took on Rubio Rubin who came in second in the golden boot race, last round they faced Ihsan Sacko who won the golden boot this season and now they face a familiar foe in Khori Bennett. Bennett scored twice in the two clubs first meeting of the season back in March. Since then he tacked on 14 more finishing the season with 16 this season. That was good for third in the USL behind Ihsan Sacko and Rubio Rubin.
